Mailbox Monday #22 - Valentine's Day Weekend

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

Still snowing in much of the Northern and Eastern US, so the mail will be picked up whenever. On a positive note, all this bad weather gives us more time to sit inside and read where it's cozy and warm. Unless we can fly off to a Florida or California. Back to reality!

I hope everyone had a good week and a few new books in their mailbox.

This is a story about unleashing the hidden truths that haunt a quiet Southern family. Author said: This story is completely fictional. The characters and events came from my healthy imagination. They do not reflect any people I know or love. The characters took on their own personalities and made their own decisions. The Clock Strikes Midnight was a fun book to write. I spent years living with these characters. I hope the readers will enjoy their brief time with them.

Book Title: The Last Taboo: Saying No to Motherhood
Author: Rosemary Agonito
Publisher: Algora Publishing
Published: 2014/08/11 (164 Pages, Paperbook)

The Last Taboo' makes the case against having babies despite fierce, centuries old pressure on women to legitimate themselves through motherhood. Motherhood is the most important issue for a woman since it impacts everything in her life and exerts incredible pressure. This alternative, saying no to babies, will be welcome to women who are considering having babies, who are not sure about children, who don't want to have children but feel they must, who resent pressure to become pregnant, and who feel stigmatized for not having had children. Feminists, environmentalists, progressives will also benefit, as will academic programs in women's studies and family. The glorification of motherhood is everywhere in the media. 'The Last Taboo' breaks ground in questioning the motherhood 'requirement' and its glorification, while testifying to the harm motherhood regularly does to (1) women (their relationships, finances, careers, self-identity, physical energy), (2) unwanted children (half of all pregnancies are unplanned), and (3) the human species and environment (whose very existences are threatened by excessive reproduction.) For too long, women have been consigned to a life not suited to all, or even most women in the modern era, an era reeling under the environmental devastation of overpopulation. Women are not obliged to have children, despite great pressures. Motherhood is not a prerequisite for being a 'real' woman.

It’s December 1837, and the young adults of the Cynster clan have succeeded in having the family Christmas celebration held at snow-bound Casphairn Manor, Richard and Catriona Cynster’s home. Led by Sebastian, Marquess of Earith, and by Lucilla, future Lady of the Vale, and her twin brother, Marcus, the upcoming generation has their own plans for the holiday season.

Yet where Cynsters gather, love is never far behind—the festive occasion brings together Daniel Crosbie, tutor to Lucifer Cynster’s sons, and Claire Meadows, widow and governess to Gabriel Cynster’s daughter. Daniel and Claire have met before and the embers of an unexpected passion smolder between them, but once bitten, twice shy, Claire believes a second marriage is not in her stars. Daniel, however, is determined to press his suit. He’s seen the love the Cynsters share, and Claire is the lady with whom he dreams of sharing his life. Assisted by a bevy of Cynsters—innate matchmakers every one—Daniel strives to persuade Claire that trusting him with her hand and her heart is her right path to happiness.

Meanwhile, out riding on Christmas Eve, the young adults of the Cynster clan respond to a plea for help. Summoned to a humble dwelling in ruggedly forested mountains, Lucilla is called on to help with the difficult birth of a child, while the others rise to the challenge of helping her. With a violent storm closing in and severely limited options, the next generation of Cynsters face their first collective test—can they save this mother and child? And themselves, too?

Back at the manor, Claire is increasingly drawn to Daniel and despite her misgivings, against the backdrop of the ongoing festivities their relationship deepens. Yet she remains torn—until catastrophe strikes, and by winter’s light, she learns that love—true love—is worth any risk, any price.

A tale brimming with all the magical delights of a Scottish festive season.

Book Title: The Children Return: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel
Author: Martian Walker
Publisher: Knopf
Publish Date: April 28, 2015
Received from Edelweiss For Review

The Dordogne's favorite chief of police is back in a heart-poundingly suspenseful case that finds his small town innocently targeted by a global terrorism network.

When an agent tracking domestic jihadists is found murdered near St. Denis, it's troubling enough for Bruno's beloved village. But when Sami--an autistic Muslim youth raised locally but thought lost to Islamic extremism in Afghanistan--comes home, things get far more complicated: abducted and exploited for his technological genius, Sami has used that same talent to gather a trove of al-Qaeda intel. Now the same jihadists who killed the agent aim to silence Sami, and as an international tribunal descends to process Sami's case, Bruno must scramble to track the terrorists down before they exact their own justice. Meanwhile, Bruno's juggling the affections of a sometime lover and the mixed, alluring signals of one of the high-ranking U.S. intelligence officers on Sami's case. Add to that a member of the tribunal with dangerous skeletons in his closet, and a high-profile Jewish philanthropist whose presence in St. Denis seems to be attracting attention from the jihadists. It's almost enough to make Bruno miss out on the village's wine harvest supper.
