Born and raised in Cajun country, Lee Stephen spent his childhood paddling pirogues through the marshes of South Louisiana. When he wasn’t catching bullfrogs or playing with alligators in the bathtub (both true), he was escaping to the world of the imagination, creating worlds in his mind filled with strange creatures and epic journeys. This hasn’t stopped.

Now a resident of Luling, Louisiana, Lee spends time every day delving into the world of Epic, the science-fiction series that has come to define him as a writer and producer. Alongside his wife, Lindsey, their sons, Levi and Lawson, and their dog, Jake, Lee has made it a mission to create a series that is unique in its genre—one unafraid to address the human condition while staying grounded in elements of faith.

He's Captured My Heart by Karen Frances Harbaugh

He's Captured My Heart Book Cover Karen Frances Harbaugh Romance
Book Title: He's Captured My Heart
Author: Karen Frances Harbaugh
Genre: Romance, Contemporary Romance, Adult
Series: Captured #1
Publisher: KAREN FRANCES
Publish Date: 1/28/15 (416 Pages, Paperback)
Disclaimer: I received this book from Samantha from The Write Connections for an honest review
Description: Like any dutiful Scottish daughter, Libby Stewart puts her family first. She’s spent months helping her brother, a single father, care for his new daughter. The strain of her family commitments led to the painful demise of a two-year relationship. As Libby nurses her broken heart and relishes time with her niece, her father offers her a job managing his hotel. She’s ready to focus on her career and get her life back on track.
Alexander Mathews, a handsome American businessman who is staying at the hotel, has other plans for Libby. She’s taken aback when she meets Alex. He strikes her as arrogant and domineering, but regardless, the sexual tension between them is palpable. Libby fancies herself a good girl, but Alex quickly seduces her. Libby finds she is soon addicted to the passion she feels in Alex’s skilful hands.

Libby has never been so confused. Who is Alex Mathews, really? An international playboy, or truly the man of her dreams? When a confrontation with her ex-boyfriend turns violent and she questions Alex’s loyalty to her, Libby must decide if she wants to let this charismatic stranger from across the pond truly capture her heart.

He caught my heart is more of a romance story than anything. It mainly about Libby Stewart. Her dad had a client come in and is to show her around.

Alex comes with his friend and business partner. This friend name is Michael. There quite a few things going on as you turn the pages of the book. Though Libby and Alex have a little trouble keeping from being a part.

Though the story starts out about Libby brother Ethan and his struggles to raising his daughter. There seems to be a story of romance. We see a villain in the story that use to be Libby boyfriend. Libby is trying to heal from a broken heart. Alex seems to have other plans for her.

She is attacked by her ex-boyfriend. What will happen to them? Will Libby trust the stranger or will she let him go? I advise this book for though that really like romance but also watch with the age you allow your children to read. For it really has some sexual acts and has some scenes where they are nude together. I suggest the of age 18 and up is best for this book.

Author Interview: Susan Pashman
Description: Meet Bettina Grosjean, a professor of Women's History, and her husband, a high-ranking environmental policymaker in the New York City mayor's office. Once a pair of student radicals, they are now raising their two brainy children on New York's Upper West Side. Upper West Side Story is the tale of fierce parental love tested in a startling eruption of racial hostility and political chicanery within the very community they have long loved and helped to build. Despite the deep love and affection they have for each other, their domestic life is suddenly thrown into crisis by a shocking and tragic event: During a school field trip, their son Max and his best friend, Cyrus, are horsing around when, in a freak accident, Cyrus falls down a flight of stairs. The fact that Cyrus is black, that his mother is Bettina's closest friend, that jealousy, suspicion and resentment have long been simmering in the community, and that there are powerful political forces at work as well-all conspire to reveal an ugly underbelly of the community the Grosjeans have worked so hard to fashion into a model of an enlightened, multiracial world. Upper West Side Story is also the story of a remarkable multi-racial friendship, a love of two women united by their ideals and their devotion to their children, then divided by events that spiral out of control.

Have you ever read a book about justice that going on in your world that important to all. You thought it was dealt with in a movement that happens 50 years.

You see it still going on today. Well, a book called "Upper West Side Story", bring it to light and questions if our race is still an uphill battle among us. I got this feeling while I was reading the story. We meet a mother who will do anything to protect her son. This story really turns out to be a well written about a boy who is white and a friend with a black boy. We learn about friendships. Matt and Curtis are best friends. Everything changes after a freak accident.

The real issues come out during this time. It affects the whole family but mostly Matt. Viola losses everything but does the community realize that Matt is a child of Viola as well as Curtis is to Bettina. It happens during a time when they were fooling around or goofing around. Racial issues and political issues arise will they overcome or will the charges damaged all including the boy and his family.

Susan Pashman is a philosophy professor and former attorney. While in law school, she served a year in the New York City Council President’s office; some of what she learned there has found its way into this story. But most of this book derives from her experience of raising two boys on her own in Brooklyn. Many of her sons’ childhood exploits, and the hopes and fears she had for them, became the heart of this novel.
She now resides in Sag Harbor, New York, with her husband, Jack Weinstein.

Describe your book in 20 words or less.

Both a tender family tale and a story of what happens when racial resentments and distrust threaten innocent lives.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

The idea started when someone at a Thanksgiving dinner said how pleased he was that a handful of black children were being placed in his son's all-white class in an all-white neighborhood. He thought it would be a "great experience" for his son. I could only think about how those kids were being used as teaching devices and I started wondering about all the things that could go wrong and burst this Thanksgiving guest's liberal bubble.

How important are names to you in your book(s)? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you use any resources in assisting you to choose the names?

I love this question because names do so much to portray a character, the sounds of the names most especially. I based the two kids in my books central family on two kids I knew. It broke my heart when I had to change their names after the book was finished, to protect the privacy of the children I'd used as my models.

Which of your characters (in this book) is your favorite and why?

My favorite is Zach. He is based on a friend's young child but many of his characteristics are based on my own older son and his adventures are based on things that happened to my younger son. What he incorporates of my two sons is the source of my love for him.

Was there a certain scene in this book that was harder for you to write than others?

As always, it's the sex scene. In this book, there is an almost-sex scene that was difficult because it was hard to know just how far to let the people go. It had to be infuriating and also embarrassingly comical.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

Kate Winslett would probably play the mother and Viola Davis should definitely play her best friend.

I'm not sure about the kids--two who are white, one who is black, and many other less significant roles for children--because I really don't know child actors. I haven't tried to picture the father but Russell Crowe or another middle-aged actor who can play a shrewd but highly intelligent guy would be right.

What was your favorite part to write and why? (Alternate Q: What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?)

My favorite part to write was the series of dialogs between the white liberal mother and the black mothers who each give her a piece of their minds and lead her to see that things aren't as simple as she believed and that the special enrichment program she has set up for bright children in her son's school is not necessarily the welcome gift she thought it was. I had a great time letting those black mothers rip, pouring out their resentments and anger. The scene pretty much wrote itself.

Just as your book(s) inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write? (Alternate Q: If you didn't like writing books, what would you do for a living?

James Salter inspired me to write my first book because I felt challenged to write as beautifully as he. I love his metaphors, so surprising and yet so right on. I love the poetry--the sound and rhythms --of his sentences.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Be prepared to re-write almost endlessly and understand that writing is the fun part. Marketing is the killer, the price you pay for having had all that fun writing.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I've probably been very lucky with reviews. Reviewers say very nice things about my writing. But literary agents and small press editors say terrible things and when they are really bad, I just realize that they are crazy, or angry or have had a bad hair day.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?

I am a philosopher by training and calling and my next book is a philosophical meditation on Sabbath-keeping. I show how the major philosophers through the ages have each got something to contribute to an understanding of Sabbath-keeping that makes it a meaningful practice in today's world.

Bonus Question: Characters often find themselves in situations they aren't sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

The worst situation I ever got into was of my own making. i was divorced as I wanted to be and had two very small sons and a large Labrador retriever. Everyone had to be fed and tended and loved and I had to make a good living to keep them as I wanted to. At times I thought I would break i half or shatter. I got through it by putting one foot in front of the other until the days and months and years passed. And then I missed them all terribly.

Thank you for stopping by Susan Pashman. I have enjoyed your book. I learn a lot about our issues in our culture. I happy for you have stop by Nighttime Reading Center. I hope you come back.

Fast Freddy by Lee Ann Mancini

Fast Freddy book cover, sea creatures Lee Ann Mancini
 Book Title: Fast Freddy
Author: Lee Ann Mancini
Genre: Children, Friendship,
Publisher: GLM Publishing
Published Date: April 9, 2015 (28 Pages, Paperback)
ISBN: 9780578140766
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through the BookCrash.com for an honesty review
Description: Fast Freddy is one of the sea kids that live in the “coralhood.” Fast Freddy overcomes the ridicule of being different (half shark, half octopus) from the other kids in his new school. Once they find out he can swim fast like a shark, they ask him to join the swim team. They realize he is a great kid and are happy that he helps them win the championship for the first time. He comes from behind overcoming Marcus who is a formidable threat on team Barracudas. His octopus arms wave in victory as he crosses the finish line! Freddy receives the MVP award, but says a prayer of thanks to Jesus for being different and having new friends
The story behind this book is about being special in your own way. It also focuses on making new friends and learning to help with fitting in. The audience is for children and parents that have small children. There is a meaning behind the plot that teach children that it okay to be different.

Your children will learn that being different is not all bad. Your children will learn how special they are. This is a great book to have it as a conversation starter. This also a good book for beginner readers. Children can learn that about being unique can be a blessing. The art and font were helpful. It was also inspiring a bit.

I thought the pictures were well done. I could see the what the book was about with pictures. The words are big enough for children that are just started to read. Images were colorful. Fast Freddy is an easy read. I recommend this book for young readers. Parents can read this book as well to their children. I also like the way the author has put it together where you will learn about friendships as well. It is a fun and sweet book to read.

Forty years later, Heather Siegel tells the remarkable story of how she and her siblings, Jaz and Greg, banded together to find out what happened to their mother and fight their way Out from the Underworld with nothing but their wits, determination, unbreakable bonds and gifts for humor and compassion to sustain them. The story starts out by having Heather with her daughter and visiting her father. Heather starts the story of her childhood from when her mother left them. The story is painful but intruding at the same time.

We get the authors view of things through her eyes. We also learn about how she and her sister Jazz needs to deal with grieving. We learn about her life in foster care with her brother and sister. Heather has a hard time with her mother's loss.

We see what happens when their father has to make his decision. The siblings have a bond together. We also learn about their father background and the family history. I learned that the siblings had a strong bond with each other. They can not seem to understand why their father does not want to escape the basement.
